To Live Aloft asks one of my favorite questions in the entire series: what if the Airships have lives of their own?

As Mika and I developed this exhibition, our conversations wandered into the idea of sentient Airships. I was reminded of the science fiction series Farscape, where the ship itself is a living being, and that thought opened up an entirely new way of imagining these vessels.

This Airship is adorned with shrubs and growing vegetation, hinting that it may be more than a machine. Are the gardens simply decoration, or are they an essential part of its life? We never answered that question, and I think the mystery is part of its charm.

Perhaps, as Mika's haiku suggests, the distinction doesn't matter. Sometimes we travel through the things that carry us, and sometimes we become them. The journey is shared either way.
